REMEMBERING.....

        R.B. and Fran Wheeler

Frances M. Wheeler, age 94, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2011 and R.B. Wheeler, age 95, passed away on Thursday January 5, 2012

Robert Bruce (R.B.) Wheeler was born November 6, 1916 on the Wheeler farm in Lemert, ND. R.B. graduated from Carrington High School in 1935. And, after high school, R.B. was employed by the Gamble Company in Dickinson, ND and then in Lemmon, SD.

During his time in Lemmon, R.B. met Frances Mae Surring of Lemmon, SD. Frances Mae (Surring) Wheeler was born on May 8, 1917 in Ellingson, SD. She was raised on a homestead south of Reeder, ND. From the farm her family moved to Reeder until 1928, when her father relocated to Bison, SD. Eight years later Fran’s father came to Lemmon and purchased a barber shop.

Fran graduated, with honors, from Bison High School in 1936. After high school she attended Samuel’s School of Hair Dressing and Cosmetology at Sioux City, IA. She then returned to Lemmon and worked with her sister in Lucille’s Beauty Salon and that's when she met R.B.

Fran and R.B. were united in marriage September 15, 1939 in Lemmon. This union lasted for 72 years. To this union were born two sons: Rob Lance and Bradford James and, in time, they were blessed with five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Their two sons, Rob and Brad joined the family business in 1978 and worked alongside their parents until R.B. and Fran retired in August, 2001.

The couple initially moved to Minneapolis as R.B. continued his employment with the Gamble Co. Then, in 1942 R.B. joined the U.S. Army and served in World War II and was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. During this time, Fran moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the FBI. R.B. received a Bronze Star for his service as a Warrant Officer in the Army.

After the war, R.B. was unsettled with the congestion of life in Minneapolis and the “clatter” of street cars. On April 1, 1946, Fran and R.B. took their savings and purchased, from R.M. Horr, a jewelry manufacturing company that would become the Wheeler Jewelry Manufacturing Company Inc. The “shop” (as the company was known to the family) was a dominant part of R.B.’s life. Fran worked alongside her husband hand engraving rings in the early years of the business and later proficiently looking after the accounts.

R.B.and Fran loved the Lemmon community and where R.B. was always interested in economic development projects of any kind Fran held the Lemmon School System, the Lemmon Library, the Lemmon Area Medical Association, and the Grand River Museum close in her philanthropic interests. Both were long time member of Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church and while Fran held the position of Sunday School Superintendent, Cub Scout Den Mother, and was an active member of the 20th Century Women’s Club, R.B. held many public service positions in the Lemmon area including Fire Chief, Mayor, Perkins County Commissioner, Lemmon School Board Member, and whe as on the Street Committee when Lemmon obtained “paved” streets for the first time. R.B. also enjoyed many philanthropic interests that supported the Lemmon area and was very involved in the establishment of the Lemmon Area Medical Association. In 1995, R.B. was honored as he was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

R.B. truly enjoyed spending time with the employees at Wheeler Mfg. and it is there where you will find many employees who have “their” special stories to share about R.B.
